English 11 Block 1: Homework for Monday
  • If not done, create two quotations from UTROD that demonstrate the third person limited omniscient point of view. One quotation should be done using the colon method, and the other quotation should use the portion method.
  • If not done, finish the questions on "The Chaser":
    • Answer in full sentences only!
      • 1. Situational Irony: There’s a reason why the poison costs more than the love potion! How will giving the love potion to Diana bring about results that are the opposite of what is expected? (3)
      • 2. Verbal Irony: The old man sounds like he is being helpful and generous. Why is he not? What is he implying will happen when Alan is older? (4) 
      • 3. Dramatic Irony: We as readers seem to know something that Alan does not. What do we know or sense about the old man that Alan doesn’t seem to understand? (3)
      • 4. A euphemism is a phrase that tries to cover up (obfuscate) the harshness of reality. How is “spot remover” a euphemism?

    English 12 Block 2: Homework for Monday
    • Read Maya Angelou's "Grandmother's Victory". There will be a special surprise on Monday, so read Angelou's narrative essay carefully!
    • If not finished, complete the following for Joan Didion's "The Metropolitan Cathedral..."
      • Read the essay carefully and complete a short analysis (about 100 to 200 words). The analysis should be written in paragraph form or in separate but complete sentences.
      • What exactly should the analysis include? 
        • Name of article and author (.5)
        • Main thesis or point of essay (.5)
        • Explain at least 3 major events/examples/points in the essay. This should take at least three sentences. (3)
        • Explain how this is a descriptive form of essay. This should take at least two sentences. (3)
