English 12 Block 2: Homework for Wednesday
- Read "Death and Justice" for tomorrow's in-class test.
- Review these notes on colons and semi-colons.
- If not done, read George Woodcock's "The Tyranny of the Clock" and answer the following:
- 1. According to Woodcock, what is the difference between the ancient and modern western definitions of time? (2)
- 2. Why are the years 1540 and 1657 so important to the history of time? Explain. (2)
- 3. Which group embraced and encouraged the new conception of time? Why? (2)
- 4. Woodcock is an anarchist who believes that “civilization” ruins the natural freedom and happiness of humankind. How does this relate to the clock? (2)
- 5. Provide one reason why this is an expository essay. Then, offer one reason why this is not an expository essay. (4)
- Answer in full sentences. Ensure your answers are full and thorough. Hand in your answers on a separate piece of paper.
- For those who didn't complete the in-class questions, here's the alternate assignment for Jo Goodwin Parker's "What is poverty?":
- What actually is (in a paragraph of 7 to 14 sentences), Parker's definition of poverty? Make sure you have a topic sentence, 3-4 specific examples, and a concluding sentence.
