English 12 Block 1: Homework for Wednesday
  • Read Jo Goodwin Parker's "What is poverty?" and answer the following questions:
    • 1. What is the main point (thesis) of this essay? (2)
    • 2. Explain at least 3 major examples or illustrations in Parker’s essay. This should take at least three sentences. (3)
    • 3. Explain one stylistic device used in this essay. (2)
    • 4. Explain how this is an expository form of essay. This should take at least two sentences. Is it completely expository? Why or why not? (4)
    • 5. Evaluation: What did you like and/or dislike about this essay? Be specific. (2)
      • Answer in full sentences. Ensure your answers are full and thorough. Hand in your answers on a separate piece of paper. 
  • Did you write the spelling test?
  • Did you read Margaret Laurence's "Where the World Began" and answer the following questions?
    • 1. What is the topic and thesis of Laurence’s essay? (2)
    • 2. Why were young men begging for “a drink of water and a sandwich if you could spare it”? (2)
    • 3. Explain one example of how Laurence’s town is strange. Provide another example of how her town is cruel. (4)
    • 4. How does Laurence use strong verbs or adjectives in paragraph four or five to describe her town? [Choose one or two examples and explain them.] (2)
    • 5. Identify and explain one example of figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification, oxymoron, etc.) used in the essay. Paragraphs seven and eleven provide good examples. (2)
