English 12 Block 1:
- Quiz alert! On Monday, we will have a short comprehension quiz on Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" (published in 1894).
- It's the 2nd story in the short story booklet. Alternatively, you can read it online here.
- In order to study for the quiz, consider the following:
- Basic Plot (What were the major events? What happened at the end?)
- Characters (Who are the characters? What do we know about them?
- Irony (Where do you see irony? What kinds of irony do you see?)
- Review irony here.
- Have you finished your grammar and UTROD tests? If not, see me ASAP!
- If not finished, read "Say Yes" and answer the following questions:
- 1. Explain the argument that Ann and her husband are having. (2)
- 2. Is the husband a sincere man, or is he deluding (kidding) himself? Explain with reasons. (2)
- 3. The story is told in the 3rd person limited omniscient point of view. Which character’s perspective is this story told from? Why do you think Wolff made this choice? (2)
- 4. Explain what you believe to be the central theme of the story. What insight into the human condition is being offered? (2)
- 5. Nothing is by accident in a short story. Explain what the dogs or the dishwater might symbolize. (2)
- Answer in full sentences only! Don’t start with “To”, “Because”, “That” or “So”.
English 9 Block 2:
- Finish your first rough copy body paragraph for our "courage essay".
- Choose one of the people we've studied, and write a standard paragraph on why s/he is courageous. Don't re-tell me their story; give me three examples of why they are brave. Provide a topic sentence, give me the three examples, and finish with a conclusion.
- Here's a sample topic sentence that you are free to use: ___________ is a courageous person because _____________. First, ... [Obviously, you'll fill in the blanks.]
- Notes #4: Finish your notes on "A Runner's Conscience" in Interface. Aim for 10 to 14 notes. Short quotes are welcome. /10 marks
- Notes #3: Finish the second page of notes on Viola Desmond. Aim for about 5-7 notes for each side. Focus on the most important facts. /10 marks
- Notes #2: If not done, finish your notes on Suu Kyi (p. 141 of Interface).
- Give me one sentence per paragraph that summarizes the key points of that sentence. You will have to make choices about what's important and what's unimportant.
English 11 Block 3:

- Grammar: We've finished the first cycle of the "Parts of the Sentence" mini-unit, and today we started on our review. Look for the test in two weeks. The parts in bold are the topics we have now reviewed.
