 English 11 Block 1: Homework for Monday

  • Test alert! We've got a test on sentence fragments and run-on sentences on Monday! Read your handouts thoroughly, and then read these:
  • Type up your essay in good copy
    • It was due in via Office 365 Share by Thursday, April 11.
    • Follow the checklist!
    • If possible, add in your two bonus appositives and two bonus subordinate clauses. Don't bolden or highlight the entire sentence!

Philosophy 12 Block 2: 
Homework for Monday
  • For Monday, finish ALL the questions for Metaphysics 1.
  • For Monday, read George Woodcock's "The Tyranny of the Clock" (or on p. 311 of 75 Readings Plus) and answer the following questions:
    • 1. According to Woodcock, what is the difference between the ancient and modern western definitions of time? (2)
    • 2. Which group in society in particular embraced and encouraged the new conception of time? Why? (2)
    • 3. Why did punctuality gradually become a virtue? (2)
    • 4. Why can we conclude that Woodcock is an anarchist? Explain. (2) [This might help: an introduction to anarchism.]
    • 5. Why is the clock a potential threat to our autonomy? (2)
      • Answer in full sentences. Ensure your answers are full and thorough. Don’t start with “Because”, “So”, “That” or “Which”. Hand in your answers on a separate piece of paper. 
  • Here are the journal entries (so far) for Round 2:
    • 10. You are the captain of a 20-crew submarine that’s lying on the seabed. Its engines are destroyed. Rescue is three days away. There’s only enough air for five people over that three-day span. What do you decide? What’s the rationale for your decision? 
    • 9. Lawyers take a solemn oath to defend the interests of their clients. They must not suppress information either. If you were the lawyer, would you withhold information that implicates your client in a violent crime, even if you might be disbarred? 


English 12 Block 3: 
Homework for Monday
  • Watch this video on complex writing:


  • Finish the quotation exercises:
    • find 6 quotations (6);
    • blend these 6 quotations (in any order) using the three blending systems discussed today (12).
  • Type up your good copy paragraph. It was due Tuesday!
    • Follow the checklist!
    • Highlight or underline your sections (TS,B1, B2,etc.) AND bolden your two bonus parts (an appositive phrase and a dependent clause; don't give me the whole sentence).

  • Read Chp. 9 of October Sky for Thursday. Continue the Part 2 study guide with as much detail as possible and review the vocabulary.
    • The next test, on Part 2, is coming up on Tue. April 23 Friday, April 19 (a double block).
  • Review the following grammar notes:

    • Read Chps. 1-6 of October SkyComplete the study guide with as much detail as possible and review the vocabulary on the back!
