 English 11 Block 1: Homework for Friday

  • October Sky: Read Chp. 2 of October Sky and complete that section of the Part 1 study guide with as much detail as possible. Also, study your vocabulary!
    • Be ready for the Part 1 test on Thursday, May 16.

  • We are now starting our unit on political philosophy!

  • Complete the topic organizer on addiction. Read the article on Jordy AND watch the following videos:
  • Here are the journal entries (so far) for Round 2:
    • 16. Your home, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any two items. What would they be? Why?
    • 15. In your opinion, is the universe a system of mechanical laws that acts without thought, or is there some spiritual, moral force that provides meaning to our lives, or is there nothing? Is there a 4th option?
    • 13. If you could pass the rest of your life cared for in every way as you slumbered peacefully, entranced by wonderful dreams, would you do so? 
    • 12. If you could choose the sex and physical appearance of your soon-to-be-born child, would you do it? Why or why not?Would it make a difference if we were talking about diseases like Parkinson’s?

    • 9. Lawyers take a solemn oath to defend the interests of their clients. They must not suppress information either. If you were the lawyer, would you withhold information that implicates your client in a violent crime, even if you might be disbarred?

Homework for Friday
  • The Great GatsbyFor Friday, read all of Chp. 3 and finish one page of Cornell notes. These notes are due on Friday.
    • For the main note taking area, aim for 10-12 main points, or roughly 1 point-form note per 2 pages. You can supplement this with smaller sub-points and short quotes. I want detail, not prettiness! :-)
    • Test alert! Be ready for the Part 1 test of TGG next Monday (May 13)!
    • You can read your novel or...
      • read TGG online;
      • ask me to send you an .epub electronic book file;
      • ask your support teacher for an audio book version.
