English 12 Blocks 1/2: Homework for Thursday
- Read "The Censors" by Luisa Valenzuela. The answer the following 4 questions:
- 1. Incentive moment: What does Juan do, “without thinking twice”, that launches the story forward? (2)
- 2. Setting: Explain the society in which Juan lives. You must consider the subtle clues! (2)
- 4. Explain the ironic twist at the end of the story. (2)
- 5. Theme Question: What insight into the human condition (and human psychology) do you think Valenzuela is trying to make? (2)
- Answer in full sentences only! Don’t start with “To”, “Because”, “That” or “So”.
- If not finished, read “Say Yes” by Tobias Wolff. Then, answer the following alternate paragraph assignment on a separate piece of paper:
- In a complete paragraph, explain one major theme of the short story. Provide an introductory sentence, a body of at least two fully explained examples, and a concluding sentence. /10
- Review these sites (one and two) on "subject and predicate".
- Get your parent or guardian to sign the parental letter and bring it back to class. (/10!)
- Create three labeled tabs for your binder. Label your tabs as Grammar, Writing, and Units. I'll start marking these (/5) next week.
