 English 12 Blocks 1/2: Homework for Thursday

  • Read "The Censors" by Luisa Valenzuela. The answer the following 4 questions:
    • 1. Incentive moment: What does Juan do, “without thinking twice”, that launches the story forward? (2)
    • 2. Setting: Explain the society in which Juan lives. You must consider the subtle clues! (2)
    • 4. Explain the ironic twist at the end of the story. (2)
    • 5. Theme Question: What insight into the human condition (and human psychology) do you think Valenzuela is trying to make? (2)
      • Answer in full sentences only! Don’t start with “To”, “Because”, “That” or “So”.
  • If not finished, read Say Yes” by Tobias Wolff. Then, answer the following alternate paragraph assignment on a separate piece of paper:
    • In a complete paragraph, explain one major theme of the short story. Provide an introductory sentence, a body of at least two fully explained examples, and a concluding sentence. /10
  • Review these sites  (one and two) on "subject and predicate".
  • Get your parent or guardian to sign the parental letter and bring it back to class. (/10!)

  • Make sure you get our recent class notes on "What is wisdom?", "What is philosophy?" and the trial of Socrates.
  • Complete the following journal entries if not finished:
    • 2. Do you feel that advice from older people carries a special weight because of their greater experience?
    • 1. Would it disturb you much if you knew that, upon your death, your body would be simply thrown into the woods and left to rot? Why?
