Finish the paragraph on "The Lottery":

Explain how the simple setting, the plain language, and the POV create a surprising ending in "The Lottery".

Read "The Censors" by Luisa Valenzuela. The answer the following 4 questions:

1. Incentive moment: What does Juan do, “without thinking twice”, that launches the story forward? (2)
2. Setting: Explain the society in which Juan lives. You must consider the subtle clues! (2)
4. Explain the ironic twist at the end of the story. (2)
5. Theme Question: What insight into the human condition (and human psychology) do you think Valenzuela is trying to make? (2)

If not finished, read “Say Yes” by Tobias Wolff. Then, answer the following alternate paragraph assignment on a separate piece of paper:

In a complete paragraph, explain one major theme of the short story. Provide an introductory sentence, a body of at least two fully explained examples, and a concluding sentence. /10
